2025 PhD Software Engineer Intern (Compute Foundations), United States

We’re looking for PhD candidates to intern on the Compute Foundations team, a part of the Core Platform Engineering organization, during summer 2025 (12 weeks). You will be embedded in our engineering team and work closely with other specialists and software developers. As a PhD intern, you will work on an exciting yet bold problem in depth and independently, under the supervision of an experienced engineer on that team. **About the Team** The Platform Engineering Team (PET) (Compute, Network, Storage, Reliability and Hardware engineering, Corporate IT, and more) lies within the broader Uber Engineering group. The mission of the Platform Engineering team is to "Empower One Uber to innovate by building a world-class foundation that accelerates growth at scale." The Compute Foundations team owns defining, monitoring, and controlling operations for the infrastructure that supports Uber’s virtual computing environments. We own the many services and tools that allow us to stand up our infra in new zones, monitor health and remediate at the host layer, as well as architectural changes needed to keep our infra modern. We own the Kernel and OS and critical features at this layer which impact security and performance. We are the lowest software layer abstracting the underlying fleet of hosts whether on prem or on the cloud, and as such we are the guardians of quality and security of the production host. **What You’ll Do** - Write high quality software to meet Uber host’s performance and availability needs - Investigate and/or benchmark performance and reliability capabilities at the VM/OS/Kernel level - Collaborate with engineers from networking and container platform teams as well as Foundations - Make data driven decisions, with exceptional execution - Be motivated to own projects and push them forward with independence - Most meaningfully, have a passion to make Uber better for our customers **Basic Qualifications** - Currently enrolled in a Ph.D. program studying networking, distributed systems, operating systems, storage systems, cloud computing, and all related areas - Candidates must have at least one semester/quarter of their education left following the internship - Knowledge of underlying technical foundations of compute, storage, networking, container, and cloud, etc. - Experience in one or more object-oriented languages, including C++, Java, Python, or Go **Preferred Qualifications** - Ability to communicate effectively with both technical and business partners. - Experience in simplifying/converting business problems into technical problems. - Research mentality with a bias towards action to structure a project from idea to experimentation to prototype to implementation. - Experience presenting at industry recognized academic conferences and a good publishing record. For Seattle, WA-based roles: The base hourly rate amount for this role is USD$67.00 per hour. You will also be eligible for various benefits.
