Netflix is seeking an Associate Counsel on the Business and Legal Affairs team in Canada focused primarily on scripted original drama series, but the successful candidate will also work on comedy series, feature films, and documentary programs. The successful candidate will work closely with the entire Netflix Canada original content team (e.g. Creative, Production, Finance, Marketing) and take on wide-ranging responsibilities including:
Negotiating and drafting writer, producer, director, actor and other above the line talent agreements and eventually, deals;
Overseeing film and series projects throughout all stages from script development through post-production and exhibition on Netflix’s global streaming service from a legal and eventually, business standpoint; and
Serving as a strategic partner to help manage the Netflix Canada slate.
The role requires knowledge of the evolving Canadian regulatory framework and Canadian market parameters, as well as dexterity with traditional business and legal affairs issues and challenges. The successful candidate will be comfortable working in a fast-paced environment with significant volume, managing and taking ownership of multiple projects, working under tight timeframes and remaining calm, collaborative and effective throughout.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Understanding of and familiarity with the scripted series and/or feature film production process, and especially the business and legal affairs of feature film and/or series production.
Exceptional critical thinking skills marked by an ability to analyze business needs and drive strategic results in the deal-making process.
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills including the ability to cultivate internal and external relationships.
Willingness to innovate and engage in creative problem-solving.
Ability to work independently and adaptability to pivot as necessary.
Demonstrated ability to work cross-functionally.
Excellent project and time management skills.
Curiosity and openness to learn and apply learnings to evolve.
French language skills are a plus, but not required.
EDUCATION & WORK EXPERIENCE:
BA/BS, LLB/JD, and membership in good standing of the Law Society of Ontario.
At least 2 years of experience in film and/or television with direct experience negotiating and drafting development and production agreements for scripted film and/or series. The ideal candidate will also have a firm grasp on all aspects of the development, production and distribution of scripted film and/or television and robust Canadian industry knowledge.
Our compensation structure consists solely of an annual salary; we do not have bonuses. You choose each year how much of your compensation you want in salary versus stock options.
