The team: You’ll join “Smart Benefits Insights”, a team of six data professionals based in Amsterdam. The team’s mission is to reliably measure and report performance for Booking-sponsored benefit programs and deliver insights for decision making related to these programs. “Smart Benefits” is part of the Pricing department, that has a thriving data community, which is part of the wider Accommodations Business Unit. The role: As Data Scientist you are responsible for safeguarding & improving high quality decision making for Booking.com’s largest discounting program, which is a key driver for Accommodation growth. You’ll contribute to the programs’ reliable performance measurement and financial reporting; deliver actionable insight for Product to steer the program and closely collaborate with Product, Engineering and Machine Learning in increasing the programs’ efficiency. Key Job Responsibilities and Duties Leading the design and delivery of entire Data Science solutions based on business requirements, bringing them from the initial idea-generation phase to implementation independently. E.g. Develop and improve the experimentation framework to ensure high quality decision making. Monitor performance measurement, maintain and develop data pipelines and dashboards. Working autonomously on consuming data, preparing it for data science use, translating business problems to data stories and solving them effectively by applying suitable statistical data analysis and modeling methods. Leverage input from business partners in all of the above to determine the right technical solutions to deliver customer value. E.g. Discover trends, patterns, etc. in product related metrics to support stakeholders in decision making. Designing and interpreting quantitative experiments to objectively guide key business decision making. Responsible for collaborating with peers in related crafts (i.e. (Data) Engineering), anticipating data needs to ensure smooth progress of their individual projects. Responsible for contributing to the community of their area by supporting community projects aimed at making other data professionals more effective, actively participating in community strengthening activities (i.e. recruitment) and connecting with peers beyond their area. Role qualifications and requirements Experience solving real problems using data mining techniques and with statistical rigor Strong skills in translating business problems into data problems Strong knowledge of the possibilities and limitations of different types of data analysis and/or data science modelling Experience in experimentation, statistical and hypothesis testing Strong technical skills regarding data analysis, statistics and programming in python and pyspark Strong working knowledge of data management (engineering, data pipelines, workflows) with pyspark / Snowflake Excellent English communication skills, both written and verbal; the ability to clearly convey your message to team members and other stakeholders. Achieve impact as a team player, and maintain solid relationships with technical and non-technical stakeholders. The following skills are assets for this role: Knowledgeable about sequential testing/always valid p-values Good understanding of machine learning concepts Experience building libraries/modules in python Strong knowledge of reporting/visualization techniques (e.g. Tableau, Grafana, Power BI, etc.) Close collaboration with product teams (not just PMs, but directly with developers/engineers) Flexibility to accommodate change and thrive in ambiguity.
