Team Summary: 

The Mozilla Strategic Communications team is responsible for leading the Foundation’s conversation with the wider world. We ensure Mozilla is always speaking with a consistent, compelling voice that meets the moment. We serve as a trusted internal periscope into the audiences, channels, trends, and products relevant to Mozilla’s programs, mission and values – and generate appealing, inclusive, evergreen dialogues that build a global community of support for and engagement with the foundation.

Position Summary: 

Mozilla Foundation is hiring for a Communications Director. As a senior leader reporting to the Vice President for Strategic Communications, you'll lead the development and execution of Mozilla’s external conversations, overseeing everything from blog posts and newsletters to cutting-edge multimedia campaigns that span press, creators, social media, events, and more. Additionally, you'll manage crisis response and internal communications, craft bylines for our executives at top-tier outlets and support content strategy for our flagship event, Mozilla Festival. This role offers a chance to manage annual communications planning and team development—all while working in a highly collaborative, fast-paced environment that’s both flexible and supportive. 

The selected candidate will be highly creative, strategic, and adept at analyzing data, editing copy, connecting cultural trends to human narratives, and has solid stakeholder and project management skills. Strong existing media and press relationships are a bonus. As a Communications Director at Mozilla Foundation, you will work on…

Media Relations and PR - 30% of time

  • Cultivate an influential voice for the Foundation in earned media. 
  • Frame and pitch coverage of Foundation initiatives and policies, working with external agencies as needed
  • Ensure thorough monitoring and timely, appropriate responses to relevant news globally. 
  • Explore new formats and partnerships for narrative innovation and wider exposure

Campaigns and Content Strategy - 50% of time

  • Design and implement owned and operated content strategy tied to target audience data
  • Create and enforce style guidelines for all outgoing communications
  • Supervise and maintain briefing documents, communications plans, speeches, pitches, biographies and other presentation decks and materials for senior leaders
  • Support website, marketing, and communities leadership in publishing strategy

Annual planning and team development - 20% of time

  • Structure team operations for efficiency and consistent outcomes
  • Manage and develop junior communications staff
  • Consult with cross-functional internal clients to load balance and prioritise efficiently
  • Work with pan Mozilla teams, namely the Mozilla Corporation communications teams, to develop aligned strategies and campaigns that advance pan Mozilla communications goals

Qualifications

  • 10+ years Communications, Marketing, Field Operations, Program Management, Project Management, or related experience
  • 4 years experience in PR or communications focused on tech, thought leadership, research or consumer brands.

Competencies

  • Exceptional writing skills including experience creating blogs, articles, social media copy, executive talking points, brand messaging or the like for a business and consumer audience.
  • Established experience in communications in the media and entertainment industries. 
  • Established relationships with members of the press and a proven ability to forge new relationships quickly and genuinely.
  • Proven ability in project management and planning.
  • Professional track record of developing and executing communications strategies in support of cross-functional launches and storytelling campaigns.
  • Strong understanding of the state of media and importance of communicating the value of technology innovation and digital rights.

 

Salary and Benefits Information:

The Mozilla Foundation is dedicated to fair and equitable compensation for our staff. We aim to pay a competitive and market-based salary based on the responsibilities and requirements of the role. We do not ask for, or take into account, salary histories in our offer process.

The starting salary ranges for this role are listed below. 

  • Canada: [$174,960 - $196,611] [target salary offer - $180,427]
  • US: [$129,600 - $145,638] [target salary offer - $133,650]
  • UK:[ £83,980.80-£94,373.42 ] [target salary offer - £86,605.20]
  • Germany, Belgium, Ireland, Italy: [ €91,572.20-€102,851.53 ] [target salary offer - €94,385.45]

Some regions fall into a higher salary market and this is reflected in the example ranges below: 

  • New York and San Francisco :  [$162,000.00 - $182,047.50] [target salary offer - $167,062.50]
  • London [ £104,976.00-£117,966.78 ] [target salary offer - £108,256.50]
