Block is one company built from many blocks, all united by the same purpose of economic empowerment. The blocks that form our foundational teams — People, Finance, Counsel, Hardware, Information Security, Platform Infrastructure Engineering, and more — provide support and guidance at the corporate level. They work across business groups and around the globe, spanning time zones and disciplines to develop inclusive People policies, forecast finances, give legal counsel, safeguard systems, nurture new initiatives, and more. Every challenge creates possibilities, and we need different perspectives to see them all. Bring yours to Block.
The Role
Block is looking for an attorney with a passion for all things patents and open source to join our legal organization. You will have responsibility to counsel engineers and business leaders on a wide array of patent-related and other technology issues. You will also work with internal patent professionals and outside counsel to build and manage a sizable patent portfolio. This is a full remote role that is based anywhere in the US.
You will, under the direction of the Patents and Open Source lead:
Build a strategic and defensive patent portfolio spanning multiple product and solution categories, with focus on invention identification and harvesting during product development, strategic benchmarking, and collaboration with outside counsel on patent application preparation and prosecution.
Help in the development of analytical solutions to help shape Block’s global patent portfolio strategy, build smarter patent preparation and prosecution capabilities, and evaluate patent assets.
Have deep substantive knowledge of enterprise agreements, and other software licensing and distribution, strategic partnerships, and intellectual property (patent, trade secret, copyright) agreements.
Develop knowledge of Block’s existing and planned products, business activities, and R&D in the context of IP risks as they relate to new technologies, competitor activities, industry trends, best practices, and laws and regulations.
Collaborate with technical and commercial teams to identify patent opportunities, to advise on (and occasionally draft and negotiate) relevant IP terms in development, deployment, and use of emerging technologies.
Provide practical legal advice on different patent and IP issues, including transactional issues, and advising on pre-litigation, partnerships, open source software, licensing, and acquisition matters.
Be a source of knowledge on judicial and legislative developments relating to patents and advise Block and the team on proactive measures relating to our IP practices.
You Have
JD degree and membership in at least one state bar
Admission to the USPTO Bar
Undergraduate degree in a technical field, preferably in computer science, electrical engineering, software engineering, or related fields
Minimum of ten years of relevant patent experience in the US. In-house experience and open source experience is a plus
Experience providing intellectual property client counseling, and transactional counseling
Fluency in communicating legal concepts and risks effectively
Stay up to date with industry trends and ability to take on diverse tasks, both large and small, and to learn new and complex areas outside of your immediate expertise
Sound, practical business judgment even in novel situations, and creativity in solving problems independently
