Job Description

The Energy Technical Director leverages the global and APAC technology strategy to create a technology vision and strategy aligned to the Go to Market strategy for the Energy ANZ Market. They act as a partner to the business and their success is measured by the success of the market. 

In conjunction with Demand, technology and advisory functions, Market and Client Leadership Teams, they develop an industry point of view then drive and execute on the Go to Market strategy for the assigned market.

They focus on building exec engagement with CTOs/CIOs/Heads of Engineering and Heads of Delivery. They strategically understand, assess, define and propose technology solutions and deliver value to clients within the market. They enable Thoughtworks to attract and retain clients and technical talent.

They shape the Market’s technical culture and participate significantly in the entrepreneurial process of growing a market and running a healthy commercial business. This includes but is not limited to pre-sales pursuits, solutioning and proposal development, creating the tech strategy, supporting operations and recruiting, team building and talent cultivation. Leveraging a deep understanding of our business, our clients, the energy industry and technology, Market Tech Principals galvanize, connect and align talent with our Go to Market strategy and client needs.

They lead and support technologists who are serving clients within the Market, while demonstrating executive presence with high level client counterparts. At the same time, they should be willing to deep dive into technology solutions both with Thoughtworks and client teams to assess implementations, identify optimisations and suggest remediations.   

While spearheading Energy industry related technology, they need to demonstrate domain understanding and exercise commercial acumen. This would enable them to elevate conversations with business stakeholders to demonstrate business value and commercial benefit of their technical propositions to help secure large, long-term contracts.

Leadership is a continual balancing act between demand, delivery, domain, technology and talent depending on the needs of the business. Understanding and making strategic trade-offs across these areas is key.

Job responsibilities

  • Provide input to, and execute the APAC Energy technical and market business strategies. 
  • Work with Service Lines and other regional and global services to apply services to the local market. 
  • Support the demand organization in business development pursuits and technology solutions that allow us to attract and retain clients and technologists.
  • Actively build and leverage a professional network in the local tech community.
  • Provide technology solution oversight and leadership on existing client engagements with deep diving where necessary to unblock teams struggling to progress.
  • Build trusted relationships with senior client technology leaders on key focus accounts by demonstrating technical knowledge, domain understanding and commercial acumen.
  • Enable the creation of opinionated technology solutions for the Energy domain that demonstrate a clear competitive advantage to our clients. 

Job qualifications

Technical Skills

  • 15+ years of experience in building, designing and delivering technical solutions.
  • 10+ Tech Execution/Leadership experience in the energy industry.
  • Familiar with SaaS based energy systems and other SaaS energy solutions.
  • Experience of having led (or been a part of) Core/ Digital Transformation / Legacy Modernisation engagements in the Energy Sector.
  • Experience with application architecture and implementation, preferably full stack.
  • Experience with, and a deep understanding of data architecture, frontend architecture, platform and infrastructure.

Professional Skills

  • Strong experience in Professional Services and Consulting within Tech, with experience working in the Energy Sector.
  • Strong communication skills; ability to consultatively engage & influence CTO/CIO/Principal architect level stakeholders as well as Tech Lead level stakeholders.
  • Strong business domain knowledge and commercial acumen.
  • Proven track record of consulting skills desirable.
  • Ability to influence, align and activate Thoughtworkers and our clients.
  • Ability to partner and collaborate with leaders and functional teams within the region.
  • Experience in technical sales in roles such as pre sales solutioning is desirable.
  • Willing to travel.
  • Internally: successfully played a Technical Director for a number of energy accounts executing core/digital transformation engagement in the past.
  • Externally: played a CTO for a tier 2 or tier 3 energy retailer or VP of technology or similar roles could have you set up well to take on this role.
