Job Description

Remote

This role is a critical hire in a small team with a very large remit and a lot of opportunity ahead!

Problems you’ll be solving

  • Technical Strategy - We’re at an inflection point in the People area where we’re consciously taking a step back and rethinking our approach to the systems and processes we maintain. We’re looking for someone capable and excited about rethinking People data and systems from the ground up, with a view to building a world-class output.
  • Implementation - This is not a management position and alongside guiding the strategy there’s an expectation you can also lead by example, get your hands dirty and demonstrate how best we build the better future we’re aiming to build together. That might mean all manner of things from helping write some very basic microservices to working on standing up some dashboards reporting on important data. It’s not critical you know how to do all these things but you ideally understand what they are and are confident enough to try your hand at learning alongside the rest of the team.
  • Integrations with third-party systems - We work with a lot of existing systems like HR systems, application tracking systems and others. The core part of the role is moving data automatically and cleanly between these systems. That means interacting with lots of APIs and reading lots of JSON plus understanding the optimal architecture to get systems that might not natively interact to talk to each other. Also understanding when to get your toolbox out vs buy someone else’s work.

Requirements

  • Strong knowledge and ability to tackle problems from an automation-first approach at the low level. That means being able to handle APIs, webhooks and the business logic needed stitch them together whether that’s in no/low-code tooling or code.
  • Ability and confidence to reason about processes at a high level. E.g. understanding why a process should be structured one way over another and challenging others in the business where they might be missing context you can provide on the technical angle to People problems.
  • Ability to thrive in ambiguous environments with a high level of autonomy. We believe in allowing Pleoers the space and agency to shine.
  • A great match with our PeopleTech operating principles. These are explained in the “Specialisation Details” section but for a rough outline:
    • Transparency by default - Comfortable and capable with working transparently and in the open
    • Humans are our most precious asset - An automation-first mindset, with an ambitious approach to reducing manual workload
    • First principles first - Capable of breaking down problems and challenging presumptions before building a clear path based on well-understood reasoning
    • Immediate solves, eventual growth - Adept at both working iteratively whilst also maintaining a clear focus on long-term strategic goals and best-practice approaches

Non-requirements

  • Product software engineering experience. We’re absolutely engineering first in our mindset and actions in People Tech but we rely first and foremost on our industry-leading platforms in the People space to do the heavy lifting. That means the business logic and code we do write is relatively simplistic.
  • A desire for progression through people management. Definitely not discouraged and there’s plenty of room for growth in this role, team and specialisation but becoming a manager is far from the only path for growth here. We have a strong and equally compensated individual contributor (IC) career track if that is preferred.
  • Specific experience in our software stack in particular. But if you’re interested it includes things like Humaans, Greenhouse, Airtable, Lattice and others.

Desirables

  • Integration engineering experience. As we spend a lot of time working with third parties the more comfort with modern web APIs the better! Our current stack is Typescript running in GCP with Pub/Sub helping us run an event-driven architecture. Longer term we may move to AWS and Kafka streams as we integrate more tightly with wider Pleo infrastructure.
  • Good understanding of data models and pipelines. A lot of the upcoming work is going to be around providing a consistent data model and mapping to our many third party platforms as we complete a large migration.
  • Some experience in similar team dynamics to what’s outlined in the Team Details. Think a small technical team with a wide remit to tackle and an operational side to collaborate with and bring along on the journey.
  • Experience dealing specifically with People processes such as hiring, offboarding and payroll where there can be complex, jurisdiction-specific context.

Show me the benefits!

  • Your own Pleo card (no more out-of-pocket spending!)
  • Lunch is on us - with catering in our Lisbon, Copenhagen and London offices or a monthly lunch allowance paid directly together with  your salary in other markets 🍜
  • Private health insurance to ensure you’re fit in body and mind to do your best work
  • For this team we offer flexibility/remote working options
  • Option to purchase 5 additional days of holiday through a salary sacrifice
  • We’re trialling MyndUp to give our employees access to free mental health and wellbeing support with great success so far  ❤️‍🩹

Why join us?

Working at Pleo means you're working on something very exciting: the future of work. Our mission is to help every company go beyond the books. Pleo itself means ‘more than you’d expect’, and it’s been the secret to our success over the last 8 years. So it’s only fitting that we’d pass this philosophy onto our customers to help them make the most of their finances.

We think company spending should be delegated to all employees and teams, that it should be as automated as possible, and that it should drive a culture of responsible spending. Finance teams shouldn’t be siloed from the rest of the organisation – they should work in unity with marketing, sales, IT and everyone else.

Speaking of working in unity, our values tell the story of how we work at Pleo. We have four core values, the first of which is ‘champion the customer’, which means we address real pain points that businesses face. Next up is ‘succeed as a team’, which highlights how our strength lies in our diversity and trust in each other. We also ‘make it happen’ by taking bold decisions and following through to deliver results. Last but not least, we ‘build to scale’, creating lasting solutions that address today’s challenges and anticipate tomorrow’s needs.

So, in a nutshell, that's Pleo. Today we are a 850+ team, from over 100 nations, sitting in our Copenhagen HQ, London, Stockholm, Berlin, Madrid, Montreal and Lisbon offices —and quite a few full-time remotes in 35 other countries! Being HQ'd out of Copenhagen means we're inspired by things like a good work-life balance. If you don't work in the office with us, we'll help you set up the best remote setup possible and make sure you still have time to connect with your team.
