Your Impact

You will contribute to Axon’s product line as part of the Axon Robotics / Sky-Hero by Axon team (https://www.axon.com/products/axon-sky-hero). We are building career-defining, next-generation Drones and Robots to help reach our Moonshot: cut gun-related deaths between police and the public by 50% in 10 years.

Our products are used by tactical teams worldwide in the most challenging conditions, and as a Sr. Embedded Software Engineer, Robotics, you’ll contribute to advance Axon’s mission to Protect Life, by building advanced, Mission-Critical Embedded Robotics Software running on powerful, albeit resource-constrained Linux Systems.

Development environments include C/C++, Rust, Python, Yocto and ROS2. We don’t rely on off-the-shelf platforms or electronics. We choose the best of technology and build innovative products that include tailored software, hardware, sensors and electronics.

You’ll solve difficult challenging problems in Embedded Systems programming, using your knowledge to architect, design, implement and debug complex multi-core Robots with advanced perception capabilities and high levels of autonomy.

What You’ll Do

Location: Brussels, Belgium
Reports to: Director of Engineering

  • Be part of a high-performing team that designs and develops game-changing Robotics products to Protect Life
  • Design and develop high-performing Embedded Software for Robotics products (UAVs, UGVs, etc.), primarily on Embedded Linux systems
  • Develop in C/C++, Rust and Python on resource-constrained Embedded Systems
  • Integrate Sensors and Actuators with complex logic and autonomous behavior
  • Design and develop new use-cases on Robots, translating requirements into features and tests
  • Implement Robotics use-cases in ROS2 and custom Robotics Frameworks
  • Ensure High Quality during the entire product lifecycle, designing and implement Unit Tests, Integration Tests and CI infrastructures
  • Be involved hands-on with development, prototyping and debugging activities
  • Troubleshooting and debugging bugs, performance problems and ensuring that new problems are triaged and addressed in a timely manner
  • Collaborate with distributed teams such as Hardware, Firmware, Control Systems, Manufacturing and Compliance
  • Be a Team Player, Mentor, Strong Communicator and be ready and willing to support the Team when needed

 

What You Bring

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electronics Engineering, Robotics or equivalent
  • Minimum 8+ years of industry experience building Embedded Systems, preferably in the Robotics field
  • Minimum 8+ years of industry experience with C/C++, Python and/or other systems programming languages such as Rust
  • Strong experience with Userspace Linux Kernel development and performance optimization
  • Strong understanding of Systems Architecture, with the ability to design and implement complex, interrelated systems
  • Experience with ROS2 and common Robotics visualization/simulation environments (Gazebo, RViz, Foxglove)
  • Strong understanding of Operating Systems, Concurrency and Networking concepts
  • Strong understanding of CI/CD pipelines and QA processes
  • Experience with Sensors (accelerometer, time-of-flight, magnetometer, etc.) and Cameras integration
  • Familiarity with cryptographic primitives and mechanisms (AES, Root of Trust, Secure Boot)

Any experience with the following is a plus:

  • Experience with Rust and at least one scripting language such as Bash
  • Experience with the PX4 Flight Controller and MAVLink or other Flight Control systems
  • Experience with UAVs, UGVs or other Robotics products
  • Experience with the Yocto build system
  • Experience with Bare-Metal or RTOS Firmware Development on MCUs
  • Experience with Linux Kernel and Driver development
  • Backend communication and synchronization
  • Experience with one or more of the following: Computer Vision, Control Systems, VIO/SLAM, Path Planning and Optimization Problems
