Lightspeed is looking for a Senior Java Developer to join our team. As a Backend developer, you will support Lightspeed's Hospitality product group in our mission to expand our reach into new markets and countries while enhancing our advanced hospitality commerce platform.

For this role specifically, you will join our Pulse Squad. This team is dedicated to building a fast, flexible, mobile companion app for restaurant managers and staff to prepare, run and review their shifts. 

We are looking for a thoughtful, well-rounded Backend engineer to join our team and help build tools that thousands of customers use every single day to manage their hospitality business. You will join a healthy and collaborative team, continuously improving our engineering practices, and delivering state-of-the-art technology, all while keeping it fun.

What You’ll Be Responsible For

  • New Product Features: Design and implement new features that expand our product, and can scale to thousands of restaurant managers and staff
  • API Development: Build robust and complete RESTful APIs to integrate with our mobile application, ensuring they are well-documented and adhere to standards such as OpenAPI.
  • Clean Code and Documentation: Write clean, maintainable, well-documented and well tested code to support the scalability and reliability of our platform.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Collaborate with Product Managers, Product Designers, and Platform Teams to achieve project objectives and enhance development practices.
  • Performance Monitoring: Analyze system performance and implement monitoring solutions to ensure optimal operation and quick resolution of issues.
  • Continuous Learning and Growth: Extend your skills by learning from and growing with the team, contributing to a culture of continuous improvement and innovation.

What You’ll Be Bringing to the Team

  • Excellent communication skills in English.
  • Excellent foundational knowledge of the Java programming language
  • Good knowledge of the Java ecosystem:
    • Spring, Spring Boot and the Spring ecosystem
    • Maven (or Gradle)
    • Testing frameworks like Mockito, Junit, Spock, Testcontainers, Cucumber 
    • JPA, Hibernate or other ORM
    • Other common libraries and tooling like Lombok, Liquibase, Mapstruct, etc
  • Experience with both relational/SQL (eg. MySQL) and non-relational/NoSQL (eg. Elasticsearch, DynamoDB, Redis) databases
  • Experience writing automated unit and functional tests with one of the frameworks.
  • Knowledge of monitoring applications for performance and reliability.
  • Experience with real-time messaging systems (Kafka, Pub/Sub, etc.).
  • Solid understanding of computer science fundamentals, including object-oriented programming and design patterns.
  • Experience with building robust and complete APIs (REST, GraphQL, etc).
  • Familiarity with API documentation and standards such as OpenAPI.
  • Commitment to clean code, maintainability, and systematic correctness. 

Even better if you have, but not necessary

  • One additional backend language (preference for Go)
  • Experience scaling Microservice architectures and implementing advanced patterns of distributed and fault-tolerant systems 
  • Experience writing automated unit and functional tests
  • Experience in Agile development environments.
  • Experience with Docker & Kubernetes and running Java containers in the cloud
  • Experience in building and maintaining a CI/CD pipeline
  • Experience with cloud environments like AWS or GCP.
  • Knowledge on Security topics (authentication and authorization patterns, OAuth2, PKI, etc)
  • Computer Science degree or equivalent.
