The Role:

As the Staff Accessibility Designer (Design Systems), you’ll lead and shape the vision for accessibility-first components and patterns within our Design System, while influencing accessibility practices across the organization. In this role, you’ll collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure the creation of accessible, inclusive, and seamless user experiences. Partnering with product designers, managers, engineers, and researchers, you’ll act as the primary advocate for accessibility, driving strategic initiatives and fostering a culture of inclusivity across the organization.

The work you’ll do:

  • Lead cross-functional efforts to embed accessibility into product and system strategies, aligning with organizational goals.
  • Serve as a strategic problem solver and accessibility advocate, mentoring teams and influencing decision-making to resolve accessibility challenges.
  • Design and prototype accessible enterprise-level UI components and complex interaction patterns for the design system, specifying advanced UX and accessibility requirements.
  • Partner with engineering teams to implement accessible designs that meet WCAG 2.2 (and evolving) standards, ensuring scalability and consistency.
  • Collaborate with UX researchers to shape an inclusive research strategy, driving insights that advance equitable user journeys.
  • Own and evolve the accessibility roadmap, setting organization-wide standards, guidelines, and best practices for accessible design systems.
  • Act as a senior advisor and liaison between design and engineering, fostering partnerships that enable seamless collaboration and promote accessibility innovation.
  • Advocate for accessibility at an executive level, influencing policies, product roadmaps, and long-term strategies.

The qualifications you need:

  • Degree in Human-Computer Interaction, Interaction Design, Accessibility Design, or a related field (or equivalent experience)
  • 8+ years of experience as a UX/UI Designer or Accessibility Specialist, with a strong focus on accessibility and inclusive design.
  • Proven track record of creating and scaling accessible design systems at an organizational level, with deep expertise in interaction design, usability, and technical implementation.
  • Experience mentoring teams and advocating for accessibility at multiple levels of an organization.

Skills:

  • Expert knowledge of WCAG guidelines, ARIA standards, assistive technologies, and advanced accessibility testing methodologies.
  • Deep expertise in designing accessible interaction patterns, usability testing for diverse user groups, and driving accessibility innovation.
  • Proficiency with Figma and accessibility-first design tools, as well as experience guiding engineering implementation of accessible UI components.
  • Strong ability to drive organizational change and lead strategic initiatives in accessibility.

Collaboration:

  • Proven ability to navigate ambiguity, influence stakeholders, and drive cross-team alignment in a fast-paced environment.
  • Exceptional communication and leadership skills, with the ability to present accessibility concepts to diverse audiences, including executive stakeholders.

Portfolio:

  • A robust portfolio showcasing accessibility-first designs, strategic impact, and user advocacy, with examples of accessibility challenges solved at scale.

Preferred Qualifications: 

  • Significant experience with fast-growing enterprise or B2B products.
  • Expertise in implementing accessibility practices within agile, cross-functional teams.
  • Deep knowledge of emerging trends in inclusive design, accessibility technologies, and frameworks.
  • Proficiency in HTML/CSS or familiarity with modern front-end frameworks like Angular or React, with a focus on accessibility compliance.
