The Team

Upstart’s Compliance Testing and Monitoring team plays a critical role in ensuring Upstart adheres to regulatory requirements by systematically assessing internal controls, policies, and operational processes. Our impact lies in identifying compliance gaps, mitigating financial and reputational risks, and enhancing trust with regulators, customers, and stakeholders. The team's priorities include conducting risk-based testing, improving automation for real-time compliance monitoring, and ensuring adherence to evolving regulations, with a goal of fostering a proactive compliance culture that supports innovation while maintaining regulatory integrity. 


As a Compliance Testing Manager at Upstart, you will lead the design and execution of compliance testing programs to ensure regulatory adherence across our products and services. Your work will help identify and mitigate compliance risks, ensuring that Upstart meets legal and industry standards while maintaining operational efficiency. By collaborating with internal stakeholders, you will enhance compliance controls, drive process improvements, and foster a culture of proactive risk management.

 

Position Location - This role is available in the following locations: Remote

Time Zone Requirements - This team operates on the East/West Coast time zones. 

Travel Requirements - As a digital first company, the majority of your work can be accomplished remotely. The majority of our employees can live and work anywhere in the U.S but are encouraged to to still spend high quality time in-person collaborating via regular onsites. The in-person sessions’ cadence varies depending on the team and role; most teams meet once or twice per quarter for 2-4 consecutive days at a time.

 

How you’ll make an impact:

  • Develop and execute a risk-based compliance testing program, identifying gaps and ensuring controls align with regulatory requirements.
  • Design and implement testing methodologies, including sampling techniques, control evaluations, and root cause analysis.
  • Analyze compliance test results, prepare reports, and communicate findings with business leaders and compliance stakeholders to drive corrective actions.
  • Partner with Risk, Legal, Internal Audit, and Product teams to enhance compliance frameworks and proactively address emerging risks.
  • Monitor regulatory changes and assess their impact on existing compliance controls, updating testing strategies as needed.
  • Leverage automation and data analytics to improve compliance testing efficiency and scalability.

 

What we’re looking for: 

  • Minimum qualifications:
    • 5+ years of experience in compliance testing, audit, risk management, or regulatory oversight within financial services or fintech.
    • 3+ years of people management experience.
    • Deep knowledge of consumer lending laws and regulations (e.g., ECOA, FCRA, UDAAP, TILA, GLBA).
    • Experience conducting control assessments, issue remediation tracking, and reporting on compliance risk.
    • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills to effectively engage with stakeholders.
  • Preferred qualifications:
    • Certifications such as CRCM, CAMS, or CIA.
    • Experience working with fintech products, digital banking, or lending platforms.
    • Knowledge of data analytics tools (e.g., SQL, Tableau, Power BI) to enhance compliance testing.
    • Familiarity with AI-driven credit underwriting models and regulatory expectations around fairness and transparency.
    • Ability to adapt to a fast-paced, high-growth environment while maintaining a strong compliance culture.

At Upstart, your base pay is one part of your total compensation package.  The anticipated base salary for this position is expected to be within the below range. Your actual base pay will depend on your geographic location–with our “digital first” philosophy, Upstart uses compensation regions that vary depending on location. Individual pay is also determined by job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training. Your recruiter can share more about the specific salary range for your preferred location during the hiring process.

In addition, Upstart provides employees with target bonuses, equity compensation, and generous benefits packages (including medical, dental, vision, and 401k).
