Job Description

Who we are

About Stripe

Stripe is a financial infrastructure platform for businesses. Millions of companies - from the world’s largest enterprises to the most ambitious startups - use Stripe to accept payments, grow their revenue, and accelerate new business opportunities. Our mission is to increase the GDP of the internet, and we have a staggering amount of work ahead. That means you have an unprecedented opportunity to put the global economy within everyone's reach while doing the most important work of your career.

About the team

Payments Disputes are a critical mechanism of consumer protection, and a necessary component of every payments system in the world. Stripe Disputes is the portal through which our users participate in this aspect of the ecosystem, spanning all the varied payments providers that their customers use.

Disputes Technical Operations and Disputes Engineering are partner teams, with Technical Operations owning most of the operational aspects of Stripe's Disputes business, and Engineering owning new feature development.

Our remit – as it stands today – on Technical Operations can be broadly oriented around the two poles of “integration reliability” and “compliance and accountability”. Billions of consumers make payments through Stripe, and virtually all of our merchants encounter disputes at one point or another. It is our job to ensure that their disputes are handled without error or incident, that we can proactively eliminate operational inefficiencies in their handling, that we can repair and restore when breakages happen, and that we are responsible stewards of the financial data in our possession.

What you’ll do

Responsibilities

  • Design, build, and use tools and abstractions in code that make our jobs easier, across all the things we do (observability, intervention, reporting, reconciliation, etc).
  • Design, build, and use data sources in SQL to facilitate our (and others’) work with the data we own.
  • Create process efficiencies to meet the scale and speed of Stripe.
  • Ensure our timely compliance with accounting, auditing, and regulatory requirements.
  • Interact with Stripe’s financial partners across the world to understand their products and how Stripe uses them, drive alignment between us, hold them accountable to resolve day-to-day operational breakages, and actively develop new solutions to the problems encountered.

Who you are

We're looking for someone who meets the minimum requirements to be considered for the role. If you meet these requirements, you are encouraged to apply. The preferred qualifications are a bonus, not a requirement.

Minimum requirements

  • Have 3+ years of professional experience (does not include internships)
  • Have great technical problem-solving skills and enjoy a good mystery. This is the most key competency of any Technical Operations engineer: pure figure-it-out horsepower, and an ability to develop a working understanding of a technical system using a variety of methods. These include (but aren't limited to): reading/writing code, reading documentation or partner specifications, running debugging programs, reading logs, talking to our partners, asking well-formed questions to domain experts, or digging into the raw data through various interfaces.
  • Have experience solving open-ended problems by designing, building, and testing things in code. While not every problem requires engineering to fix, this is an engineering role, and writing code is non-negotiable.
  • Have ability to manage communications and workflows with technical and non-technical teams across internal and external stakeholders.

Preferred qualifications

A successful candidate may possess none of these, but they are nice to have regardless (and should provide a glimpse at the kinds of things we are responsible for).

  • Some professional experience in fintech or payments or even disputes specifically.
  • Some experience defining and defending your own priorities. That is to say, this is not a transactional, ticket-resolving role, so successful candidates will have a “nose for news” and an ability to work within our charter to create impact (as opposed to executing on a defined blob of work someone else handed to you).
  • Some experience doing engineering and automation for operational workflows such as Support, Accounting, or Risk Management.
