Job Description

On-site
Help shape the future of national security computing as a Cloud Engineer at AWS.

The AWS Cross Domain Operations team is seeking a cleared Cloud Engineer to support essential cross domain services for U.S. Intelligence and Defense customers. Our team maintains and operates the critical AWS infrastructure that enables secure cloud capabilities across classified environments. Your expertise will directly impact national security by ensuring the reliable operation of systems that government agencies depend on every day.

As a Cloud Engineer on our team, you'll be instrumental in managing operational excellence for our always-on cross domain systems. You'll implement and maintain robust processes that drive our availability metrics up and our latency metrics down. We need your operational expertise to ensure our infrastructure is ready to scale for future demands, and your problem-solving skills to streamline processes and improve our response times. If you're passionate about operational excellence and want to apply your skills to support critical national security missions, we want to talk to you.

This position requires that the candidate selected be a US Citizen and must currently possess and maintain an active TS/SCI security clearance with polygraph. The position further requires the candidate to opt into a commensurate clearance for each government agency for which they perform AWS work.

Key job responsibilities
As a Cloud Engineer on our Cross Domain Operations team, you will:

- Support operational excellence initiatives for mission-critical systems, focusing on availability, resiliency, and security
- Diagnose and resolve system issues across the technology stack in high-pressure situations
- Implement improvements to operational processes, including automation of manual tasks
- Participate in post-incident analysis and help implement preventive measures
- Collaborate with development teams to provide operational insights that influence system design
- Perform technical deep-dives into service components, including networking, storage, and monitoring systems
- Contribute to cross-functional initiatives to improve system reliability
- Learn and apply operational best practices and resilience engineering principles

You will work both independently and collaboratively within established operational frameworks. We're seeking someone who is curious about how systems work at scale and eager to help automate routine operations.

Success in this role requires solid troubleshooting skills, a methodical approach to incident management, and the ability to balance day-to-day operational tasks with improvement projects. You'll need to maintain high standards for security and operational excellence while working effectively as part of a team.

A day in the life
Your typical day begins with your team's daily stand-up, where you and your colleagues review operational priorities and ensure critical tasks are on track to meet SLAs. You'll actively participate in discussions and share updates on your assigned tasks and any challenges you're facing.

Throughout the day, you'll balance several key activities:

- Contributing to operational reviews and post-incident analyses
- Working with team leads to understand and implement customer requirements
- Collaborating with teammates to solve technical challenges
- Participating in design reviews to provide operational insights
- Conducting technical deep-dives into system components to support improvement initiatives

As part of our 24/7 on-call rotation, you'll be ready to respond to critical issues affecting our national security customers. During these situations, you'll work to resolve issues independently when possible, and collaborate with senior team members on more complex problems, always focusing on both immediate resolution and prevention.

Weekly operational reviews provide opportunities to share your insights and contribute to improving our processes and systems. You'll work with the team to identify and implement operational improvements that enhance our service delivery.

You'll operate as part of a collaborative team while developing your autonomy and expertise in maintaining our critical infrastructure.
