Principal Product Designer, Square Staff

Since we opened our doors in 2009, the world of commerce has evolved immensely, and so has Square. After enabling anyone to take payments and never miss a sale, we saw sellers stymied by disparate, outmoded products and tools that wouldn’t work together.

So we expanded into software and started building integrated, omnichannel solutions – to help sellers sell online, manage inventory, offer buy now, pay later functionality, book appointments, engage loyal buyers, and hire and pay staff. Across it all, we’ve embedded financial services tools at the point of sale, so merchants can access a business loan and manage their cash flow in one place. Afterpay furthers our goal to provide omnichannel tools that unlock meaningful value and growth, enabling sellers to capture the next generation shopper, increase order sizes, and compete at a larger scale.

Today, we are a partner to sellers of all sizes – large, enterprise-scale businesses with complex operations, sellers just starting, as well as merchants who began selling with Square and have grown larger over time. The Role

Square Staff makes it easy for sellers to run their team and pay them fast. From onboarding staff, to managing schedules, to getting employees paid—Staff offers a suite of tools that help sellers operate their team from clock-in to cash out.

As a Principal Product Designer, you will help shape the design decisions that inform product strategy and roadmap. Your responsibilities will include designing core features as well as exploring the future of Square Staff products. You will collaborate closely with a team of experienced designers, product managers, engineers, and data scientists to deliver an exceptional experience. In addition to working with important partners on Staff, you will work with other teams across Block (e.g. Cash App and Square Banking).

You Will

• Collaborate with Designers, Product Managers, Engineers, and Data Scientists to shape a vision and roadmap that up-levels the quality of the product experience for our customers
• Propose design and product opportunities, promote them across the organization, and own projects from concept through release
• Promote design excellence through mentorship, feedback, and knowledge sharing
• Maintain a principled, customer-centric approach throughout each project, using data, insights, and experience to inform decisions
• Experiment with new design tools, methodologies, and approaches to improve the design process and inspire creativity
• Foster a culture of experimentation and creativity, and build connections across teams and disciplines

You Have

• 12+ years of relevant Product design experience—bonus if you have worked on Workforce Management, Payroll, or Benefits products
• A portfolio demonstrating exceptional UX craft, vision, systems design, and prototyping skills 
• Experience as an influential design leader who ships impactful, strategic work—including multi-year visions to iterative releases
• Strong design point of view and understanding of how to balance the needs of the customer with that of the business
• Excellent storytelling skills, and a 'show don't tell' approach to aligning teams around a shared vision
• Experience working across native platforms and web
