Job Description

Hybrid

Waymo is an autonomous driving technology company with the mission to be the most trusted driver. Since its start as the Google Self-Driving Car Project in 2009, Waymo has focused on building the Waymo Driver—The World's Most Experienced Driver™—to improve access to mobility while saving thousands of lives now lost to traffic crashes. The Waymo Driver powers Waymo One, a fully autonomous ride-hailing service, and can also be applied to a range of vehicle platforms and product use cases. The Waymo Driver has provided over one million rider-only trips, enabled by its experience autonomously driving tens of millions of miles on public roads and tens of billions in simulation across 13+ U.S. states.

Waymo's Systems Engineering team works together to blend software and hardware systems in groundbreaking new ways. We set the high performance standards that ensure our vehicles run smoothly and keep passengers safe, then design and perform the tests that validate that performance. We're looking for talented teammates who'll help us maintain strong teamwork and are passionate about driving results.

In this hybrid role, you will report to a Systems Engineering Manager.

You will:

  • Analyze tradeoffs and drive consensus with product, hardware, and software teams to converge on a sensing architecture for a new vehicle platform
  • Use your understanding of sensing and perception technologies and systems engineering principles to propose sensing and perception requirements that flow from product goals
  • Guide communication between the sensing and perception systems engineering team and the cross-functional new platform program by representing the team’s work and ensuring the team delivers systems engineering work in support of the program
  • Develop and coordinate execution of test campaigns that accelerate product development by exposing issues and identifying root causes
  • Lead the sign-off of sensing and perception systems for deployment in a manner that upholds safety, and define the testing strategy, coordinate execution, and drive reporting of results
  • Write reusable, high quality, data analysis and test automation software (Python)

You have:

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering, physics or related technical field
  • 8+ years of experience in systems engineering or a related field
  • Familiarity with robotics, sensing, or perception technologies
  • Experience with system engineering fundamentals: requirements definition, system design and architecture, trade studies, and verification and validation methods
  • Experience working on large and complex systems
  • Experience with python

We prefer:

  • Experience with autonomous vehicles or other autonomous systems
  • Experience with different sensing modalities
  • Experience developing and testing machine learning/computer vision/AI systems
  • Experience with safety-critical systems
  • Experience with C++
