POSITION SUMMARY
As the Manager of Variant Curation, you will help the Director/Sr. Director of Variant Curation oversee the operational responsibilities of the team to ensure curation tasks are performed efficiently and accurately, while also ensuring sufficient and well-trained staff are available to meet operational needs.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:
● Alongside the Director/Sr. Director of Variant Curation, attend operational and cross-functional meetings with members of the wet-lab, Lab Directors, Quality Assurance, product managers, and Engineering teams, etc., and provide periodic updates to ensure alignment within the supervisors and production team.
● Monitor production metrics developed by the Director/Sr. Director of Variant Curation, and assign priorities to the production team to ensure turnaround times are met.
● Initiate and manage compliance with QA, including NCRs, CAPAs, competencies, and documentation.
● Improve the troubleshooting turnaround by delegating and managing resources based on business needs.
● Review genetic variant data: interpret medical literature, online variant databases, and other references to classify variants according to the internal standard operating procedures (SOPs).
● Provide operational support for the curation team and discuss clinical issues with Lab Directors as necessary.
Supervisory:
● Establish goals, review and approve assigned work and provide mentorship to further develop team members.
● In conjunction with other supervisors, oversee individual productivity metrics and hold periodic check-ins to ensure team members meet expectations and deliverables.
● Help onboard and guide junior supervisors and collaborate with other supervisors to prioritize work, validate new products, and improve workflows.
● Perform various administrative tasks related to personnel management
● Assist with corrective action plans and remedial training when necessary.
● Maintain ongoing competency and support periodic updates to procedures and workflows.
● Ensure timely completion of training requirements, including HIPAA and PHI security training
QUALIFICATIONS
● Master’s degree required (PhD preferred) in genetics or related field.
● 5+ years of supervisory or team leadership experience in genetics/variant curation or related field (industry or clinical).
● 3+ years of experience in variant curation.
● 2+ Experience in a CLIA-certified laboratory setting analyzing and interpreting genetic/genomic data.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
● Expertise in the variant review and interpretation.
● Excellent problem solving, conflict resolution, and decision-making skills.
● Good written and oral communication skills.
● Knowledge of CAP, CLIA, and state regulations (California and New York preferred).
PHYSICAL DEMANDS & WORK ENVIRONMENT:
● Prolonged periods of working on a computer/laptop and occasional standing or sitting for extended periods.
● Duties may occasionally require working shifts, weekends, or overtime.
