Job Description

Remote
At Scribd (pronounced “scribbed”), our mission is to spark human curiosity. Join our team as we create a world of stories and knowledge, democratize the exchange of ideas and information, and empower collective expertise through our three products: Everand, Scribd, and Slideshare.

We support a culture where our employees can be real and be bold; where we debate and commit as we embrace plot twists; and where every employee is empowered to take action as we prioritize the customer.

Our flexible work benefit - Scribd Flex - enables employees, in partnership with their manager, to choose the daily work-style that best suits their individual needs. As an organization, we prioritize collaboration and intentional in-person moments to build culture and connection. For this reason, occasional in-person attendance is required for all Scribd employees, regardless of their location.

At Scribd, we leverage deep data insights to inform every aspect of our business—from product development and experimentation to understanding subscriber engagement and tracking key performance indicators. You’ll lead a team of data engineers tackling complex challenges across three distinct brands—Scribd, Everand, and Slideshare—serving 300 million monthly visitors and over 2 million paying subscribers. We are heavily investing in improving our core data layer, experimentation program, and data platform to support diverse engineering needs and enable innovation at scale.

Key Responsibilities
As the Director of Data Platform, reporting to the VP of Infrastructure, you will shape and scale our data engineering function to support Scribd’s next stage of growth. This includes owning the data platform and tooling while building pipelines and data products to enable analytics, experimentation, data science, and more.

Define Strategy: Partner with the Data & Analytics team and other stakeholders to create and execute a comprehensive data strategy that drives decision-making and product innovation.
Own the Data Platform Roadmap: Develop and maintain a clear roadmap for the Data Platform. Collaborate with teams across Data, Content, and Growth to understand their needs, allocate resources strategically, and deliver impactful results.
Lead the Team: Build and mentor a high-performing engineering team, fostering a culture of excellence and continuous improvement.
Promote Engineering Excellence: Set high standards, technical best practices, and processes to manage complexity and ensure high-quality, reliable solutions.
Champion Innovation: Adopt modern data technologies to keep Scribd at the forefront of data engineering.
Ensure Data Quality and Compliance: Implement governance practices to maintain data quality, accuracy, and security while meeting regulatory standards

We’re looking for a senior leader with a strong technical foundation and a passion for building world-class data systems.

Experience: 10+ years in data-intensive software development, including 5+ years in senior engineering leadership roles.
Leadership: Proven ability to lead teams, mentor engineers, and foster a culture of accountability and success.
Strategic Vision: Skill in setting direction, aligning with executives, and executing effectively.
Collaboration: Excellent communication skills and a history of effective cross-functional teamwork.
Problem-Solving: A proactive mindset with a focus on measurable outcomes.
Technical Expertise: Strong background in building data pipelines and data architectures for complex domains.
Technical Foundation: Hands-on engineering experience at a senior level, ideally Staff+.
