The Payments Tribe

The Global Payments Tribe at HelloFresh is responsible for gathering payment details and processing payments as a part of our subscription business model, ensuring our customers are able to pay with their preferred payment methods in a seamless, scalable process. Additionally, the Payments Tribe manages customer profitability at the Company level using various retention-based initiatives. This team has a direct impact on the customer experience and is constantly optimizing for various Business KPIs. They build in-house products using modern technologies to handle a massive scale of transactions (>8.5 million active customers) and are continuously improving the SDLC for fast flow and continuous delivery.

As a Director of Payments, you will lead Engineering teams and Staff Engineers across the payments domains, providing support in their technical decision-making processes. Your responsibilities will include spearheading initiatives that traverse multiple teams and domains, such as those focused on global scalability, transaction transparency, and payment optimization. Drawing upon your comprehensive understanding of the domain, you will assume ownership of payment architecture strategy and drive the long-term vision for how our Payment systems should be architected, integrated, and scaled.

What you'll do

As a Director of Payments, you will collaborate closely with Product and Engineering teams from various domains and functions. Your role entails the management and support of all aspects of HelloFresh Payment infrastructure. Therefore, in this capacity, you will:

• Lead  Engineering teams and Staff Engineers in crafting technical solutions, ensuring alignment with our target data architecture.
• Leverage your outside experience to craft next- generation, scalable payment solutions that address the business needs today and into the future.
• Serve as an active, solution-oriented member of autonomous, cross-functional agile teams, working alongside Product Owners, Engineers, Data Scientists, Marketing teams, and Experimentation owners throughout the entire Product Development lifecycle, from Product Discovery to Delivery.
• Demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of HelloFresh’s core product and architecture, acting as a proponent for technical solutions and best practices, while offering support and mentorship to colleagues.
• Tackle software and data challenges that come with visible risks, roadblocks, and constraints, such as legacy dependencies, data quality issues, compliance concerns, or architectural and technological limitations.
• Advocate for Payments Operational Excellence, collaborating with teams and Engineering Leadership to identify and prioritize investments aimed at enhancing data quality and the resilience of data pipelines.

What you'll bring

• Deep Technical Expertise: Mastery of a broad range of technical skills relevant to Payments, Backend, Frontend and Mobile Engineering, including expertise in payment processing, payment gateway services, batch transaction processing, payment reporting, database systems, distributed computing, backend development frameworks, mobile application development platforms and data engineering tools and best practices.
• Systems Thinking: The ability to understand complex systems at a holistic level, recognizing how different components interact and impact each other, and leveraging this understanding to design and implement scalable and efficient solutions.
• Cross-Functional Collaboration: Exceptional collaboration skills to effectively work with teams spanning different engineering disciplines fostering an environment of cooperation, knowledge sharing, and alignment towards common goals.
• Leadership in Technical Decision-Making: Demonstrated leadership experience in guiding teams and decision-making processes, balancing the trade-offs between various engineering disciplines, and championing solutions that align with HelloFresh's strategic objectives while ensuring technical excellence and long-term sustainability. Ability to lead and mentor engineering teams, providing guidance, support, and direction to ensure the successful execution of projects and initiatives.
• Effective Communication Across Disciplines: Strong communication skills to articulate complex technical concepts and ideas clearly and concisely, facilitating productive discussions and collaboration among diverse engineering teams, product managers and other stakeholders.
• Customer-Centric Mindset: A deep understanding of customer needs and preferences, coupled with a dedication to delivering solutions that enhance the overall customer experience, drive engagement and satisfaction, and contribute to HelloFresh's long-term success in the competitive food delivery market.
