AWS Data Center Automation seeks a Software Development Manager to build the systems that automate and orchestrate the physical work processes that occur inside all of AWS’ global data centers and Outpost customer locations. You will own systems that will be used internally and externally by thousands of Technicians, Supply chain managers, Hardware Engineers on a daily basis to perform repair activity on millions of hosts and components to restore capacity back to AWS customers. You will help Amazon to automate and optimize the inbound receive and installation work, secure retirement of assets by building self-service applications for our customers. Our customers depend on our systems to perform their work safely, securely, efficiently, and free of defects to provide capacity for AWS customers. You will contribute to success of our core cloud infrastructure business. Our team is responsible for billions of dollars in assets and obsesses about optimizing the processes necessary to operate the AWS cloud infrastructure.
As a part of this role, you will:
- Grow and manage a team of Software Engineers.
- Set a high standard for design, testing, deployment and operations
- Recruit, hire, mentor, and coach technical staff.
- Interface with our internal customers to understand requirements, set priorities and communicate direction and progress.
- Own all operational metrics and support for your team’s software.
- Manage the agile development process and methodology to deliver value to customers.
- Help develop long-term development and business technology strategies.
- Lead team to launch new services for internal and external business and evolve our service architecture with quality, robustness and AWS size scale as top priority

As a Manager in Data Center Automation, you will own software solutions that automate and orchestrate the physical work processes that occur inside all of AWS’ global data centers. You are expected to excel when faced with ambiguity. You have high judgement and understand which opportunities drive the most strategic value for the business. You enjoy working in a collaborative, analytical, and fast-paced environment and are comfortable interacting with highly technical cross-functional teams. You have excellent analytical capabilities, be comfortable diving deep into data, and have strong writing skills. You have a track record of understanding customer needs and delivering technology solutions to address those needs. This is a highly visible position that will interact at all levels of the AWS Infrastructure business.

Our team is responsible for billions of dollars in capital and the ultimate success of our core cloud infrastructure.- 3+ years of engineering team management experience
- 7+ years of working directly within engineering teams experience
- 3+ years of designing or architecting (design patterns, reliability and scaling) of new and existing systems experience
- 8+ years of leading the definition and development of multi tier web services experience
- Knowledge of engineering practices and patterns for the full software/hardware/networks development life cycle, including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, certification, and livesite operations
- Experience partnering with product or program management teams- Experience in communicating with users, other technical teams, and senior leadership to collect requirements, describe software product features, technical designs, and product strategy
- Experience in recruiting, hiring, mentoring/coaching and managing teams of Software Engineers to improve their skills, and make them more effective, product software engineers

Our compensation reflects the cost of labor across several US geographic markets. The base pay for this position ranges from $166,400/year in our lowest geographic market up to $287,700/year in our highest geographic market. Pay is based on a number of factors including market location and may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Amazon is a total compensation company.
