The Bespoke Solutions group in AWS Region Services is looking for a Principal Applied Scientist to help define and drive formal verification of hardware, software, and RTL (FPGA) code on a networking device that will be deployed in Amazon's dedicated cloud data centers. You will be part of the team that is developing the network encryption device from the ground up and will help drive automated reasoning methods to deliver strong security guarantees to our customers.
As a member of the Bespoke Solutions Team in Region Services, you will be joining a talented full-stack development team (hardware and software) that is laser-focused on developing network security products that enable our Amazon Dedicated Cloud to operate efficiently at scale.

Key job responsibilities
As a Principal Applied Scientist in the Bespoke Solutions Group you will:
- Develop the value proposition for formal verification for the network device under development and drive building out a outcome driven FV team.
- Write, validate, and maintain formal models of the hardware that systems software controls.
- Develop and maintain specifications and machine-checked proofs to demonstrate that systems code is correct.
- Work with software engineers, RTL engineers and HW engineers to guide designs and ensure formal verification is feasible.
- Publish papers that explain the security guarantees obtained and the means by which they are established.
- Act as a principal liaison with government sponsors and stake holders around our approach to leverage formal verification in this project.
A day in the life
Working closely with hardware and software teams, you will:
- Create models of the hardware that underpins our secure communications in Amazon Dedicated Cloud regions.
- Work with experienced software systems developers to define security and correctness properties of low-level software and develop programming and design practices to enable formal reasoning about this code.
- Work with experienced hardware and RTL developers to define the security and correctness properties of the hardware and develop design practices to enable formal reasoning of the hardware devices.
- Work with senior leaders in the organization and be the single-threaded owner of communicating our vision to external government agencies on how we are leveraging automated reasoning to improve the quality and correctness of our products.
This position requires that the candidate selected be a US Citizen and must currently possess an active Secret security clearance. The position further requires that, after start, the selected candidate obtain and maintain an active TS/SCI security clearance and satisfy other security related requirements.

- Interactive theorem provers, such as Isabelle, HOL, Coq, ACL2, or Lean
- Programming and reasoning about in Rust programming language
- Experience in RTL formal verification methods
- Creating and validating mathematical models of the behavior of complex systems
- Current, active US Government Security Clearance of Secret or above- 10+ years' experience verifying software or hardware systems of industrial significance
- Experience in defining the strategy and building formal verification team from ground-up
- Knowledge of Arm system architecture, such as page table management, interrupt handling, and caching
- Familiarity with security engineering from a systems-building perspective (e.g., attack surfaces, threat models, side-channel mitigations)
- Experience with applying symbolic model checkers to verify software or hardware systems
- Current, active US Government Security Clearance of Top Secret or above

Our compensation reflects the cost of labor across several US geographic markets. The base pay for this position ranges from $179,000/year in our lowest geographic market up to $309,400/year in our highest geographic market.
