Job Description

We are looking for senior Software Engineers to join our APAC Global Compliance Operations (GCO) team in Shanghai. GCO is the technology arm for Compliance; we design, build and operate compliance systems, in collaboration with the Global Compliance team. Our responsibilities include surveilling our trading activity for regulatory compliance, reporting our activities to various regulatory bodies, and keeping an archive of trading activity to answer potential questions from regulators.

WHO WE ARE

Optiver is a global market maker founded in Amsterdam, with offices in London, Chicago, Austin, New York, Sydney, Shanghai, Hong Kong, Singapore, Taipei and Mumbai. Established in 1986, today we are a leading liquidity provider, with close to 2,000 employees in offices around the world, united in our commitment to improve the market through competitive pricing, execution and risk management. By providing liquidity on multiple exchanges across the world in various financial instruments we participate in the safeguarding of healthy and efficient markets. We provide liquidity to financial markets using our own capital, at our own risk, trading a wide range of products: listed derivatives, cash equities, ETFs, bonds and foreign currencies.

Since its establishment in 2012, our Shanghai office is a rapidly growing participant in the Chinese markets, trading exchange-listed futures, options and equities in China mainland. Our vision is to become the trusted partner in the development of Chinese financial markets. With the culture of a start-up but the backing of a 35+ year-old trading firm, the Optiver Shanghai office is truly unique. Everyone who joins us will help shape the future of our company and its global impact. Get ready: we are only just beginning.

WHAT YOU’LL DO

Our Compliance systems are critical in ensuring our global, industry-leading, low-latency trading platform meets both external regulatory requirements and internal best-practices. Every day, our trading platform processes huge volumes of data, prices thousands of financial instruments, make millions of trading decisions, and must do so in a safe, deterministic and real-time manner.

As a senior Software Engineer in the GCO team, you will be responsible for setting the architectural direction for some of our compliance systems. You’ll work on large projects that enable the success of our trading platform, and be hands-on in delivering large bodies of well-engineered code. You’ll be trusted to own your projects, from ideas through to deployment, and see the rewarding impact of your work every day.

In addition, you’ll get to:

  • Work closely with globally distributed colleagues to align and leverage compliance systems across regions.
  • Build partnerships across the business to ensure we're feeding the best ideas into our solutions.
  • Manage deployments to reduce risk and provide production support where required.
  • Help ensure quality is maintained throughout our systems, including via code reviews.
  • Contribute to our never-ending goal of continuous improvement by providing feedback and ideas on where our systems and controls can be improved.
  • Replace legacy systems and manual work with better systems.
  • Be a role model for, and mentor, junior Engineers.

WHAT YOU’LL GET

You’ll join a culture of collaboration and excellence, where you’ll be surrounded by curious thinkers and creative problem solvers. Driven by a passion for continuous improvement, you’ll thrive in a supportive, high-performing environment alongside talented colleagues, working collectively to tackle the toughest problems in the financial markets.

In return for your expertise, you will be offered a competitive salary package as well as access to a range of Optiver perks, including:

  • The chance to work alongside best-in-class professionals.
  • Office benefits, including daily breakfast, lunch, snacks etc.
  • Sponsored gym membership, sports and leisure activities, plus weekly in-house chair massages
  • Training, mentorship and personal development opportunities.
  • Regular social events, clubs and Friday afternoon drinks

WHO YOU ARE

  • Strong verbal and written communication in both Chinese and English
  • 5+ years’ experience as a Software Engineer working with distributed systems, system backends or client/server architectures
  • Expert OO programming in at least one of C/C++, Java, C# or golang
  • Strong experience with Python
  • Excellent understanding of Computer Science fundamentals, such as operating systems, data structures and algorithms
  • Experience making architectural recommendations on IT solutions, design and approach
  • Experience working through the full software development lifecycle
  • Experience working on technically challenging problems
  • A technologist who is passionate about software and interested in trading problems
  • Natural problem solver who loves nothing more than tackling a complex technical challenge
  • Team player who loves working with like-minded peers and is always looking to learn and improve
